We are united as one.
Global Community Square, "one"

In this modern society, it is easy to live without relating our lives to earth, nature and people. However, this is not true. As long as we live on this planet, we are all united as one, relating to each other.

We have started our activities under the name of "Press Alternative" in 1985. The name came from our aim to send alternative news and information to everyone. Since then, we have been engaging in various projects, starting with "The Third World Shop", where we introduce the north-south problem by selling the products made in Third World countries. We have learned the importance, greatness and beauty of our "united" relationship with the people we deal with(especially those who buy and make the products, and also the supporters who collaborate in our programs), the culture and local regions we see, and the nature we feel in our daily lives. We have created the section called "Global Community Square-one" in order to introduce our concept:"We are united as one" through culture, history, tradition and the personal history that lie behind each product.

As very first product to introduce you from "one", we have many knitting goods from Estonia, one of the Baltic States. We have found out that Estonia owns a very beautiful knitting culture as we develop our search for many regional folk and non-folk products under our concept "we are united as one". The Estonian knitting culture is not only limited to a small number of priviledged people but also enjoyed by everybody in the country. Also, Estonia, almost the same size as Kyushu Island, has more than 20 different folk costumes with its beautiful tradition of embroidery and fabrics. Estonian people have a strong identity due to the harsh and sad history their country suffered from, as you can see in occupation and oppression by foreign force. It is also curious for us to learn that some people think Japanese and Estonian have same racial origin.

We are very glad to introduce you the knitting goods from Estonia, the country with many stories to tell. We hope we can keep on knitting to make everything united as one...
